Jean-Paul Ortonne, M.D, has been Chairman of the Department of Dermatology at the University Hospital of Nice Sophia since 1983, and has held the post of President of the European Academy of Dermatology and Venerology since 1996. Jean-Paul Ortonne holds a Medical degree, and a Certification in Dermatology from the University of Lyon and has conducted research at a range of illustrious institutions, including Unité INSERM (National Institute for Clinical Research). His research includes work on the biology and physiopathology of the skin, melanocytes and pigmentation, and clinical dermo-pharmacology. Jean-Paul Ortonne has also been the principle investigator in a range of Phase I, II and III clinical trials. Jean-Paul has been a member of the French Society of Dermatology since 1984, and other memberships include the French and European Societies for Dermatological Research, the Skin Pharmacology Society, the International Committee of Dermatology and the Pan-American Society for Pigment Cell Research.
 
Professor Ortonne is strongly committed to dermatological research, and has been awarded many prizes for his work, including; the Prix Brisson, the Award of Académie Nationale de Medicine as well as the prizes of both the French Society of Dermatology and the French Dermatological Research Society. As well as editing both Dermatologica (Associate Editor) and the Journal of the European Academy of Dermatology and Venerology (Editor-in-Chief), Jean-Paul also has 159 original publications to his name, featuring in titles such as Nature Genetics, the Journal of Clinical Investigation, the Lancet and the Journal of Investigational Dermatology.
