On contact with the skin, the ethanol in the product’s film forming solution evaporates, leaving a smooth, non greasy barely visible film in one or two minutes. This results in a high local concentration of the active ingredient (terbinafine hydrochloride) at the infection site.
The lipophilic characteristics of the active ingredient and the alcohol based solution allow a quick release of terbinafine into the stratum corneum, the site of the fungal infection. Terbinafine continues to permeate into the stratum corneum from the film matrix until the film disappears after roughly 3 days. The active ingredient continues to work for up to 13 days1.
Even though Lamisil Once® works by completely covering the infection site with a smooth film, it shows low occlusivity, so that the skin continues to breathe fully. Unlike some cream or lotion treatments, the smooth film covering is clear and virtually invisible, so there is no need for the patient to cover the application site or hide the infected area during treatment.
Even though the film has waterproof attributes, for best results the patient should avoid washing both feet for up to 24 hours after application. The best time to apply it is immediately after after a bath or shower.
Patients should wait around 2 minutes before putting on their socks and shoes, to allow the film to dry. Occlusion does not rub off the film; it allows the film to remain even longer on the skin (for up to 4 days).
