frequently asked questions

Why is re-infection more likely with fungistatic treatments than with Lamisil Once®?
Typically symptoms of Athlete’s Foot appear to improve early in the course of treatment (itching stops). The early relief of symptoms can result in the sufferer discontinuing the treatment before the fungal infection is eradicated, risking relapse. Lamisil Once® can overcome this because only one application is needed to treat the fungus.

Why does LamisilOnce®  need only one application?
Its unique film forming solution (FSS) combines the antifungal agent, terbinafine hydrochloride (1%), with polymers diluted in alcohol (ethanol). On contact with the skin, ethanol evaporates leaving a smooth, barely visible film. This results in a high local concentration of the active ingredient (terbinafine HCl) at the site of application. The high concentration allows for passive movement of the drug into the stratum corneum of the skin.  Interactions between the polymer and lipids in the skin hold the film in place, providing a reservoir of the drug and allowing for movement of terbinafine into the stratum corneum over time. Due to its lipophilicity, terbinafine persists in both the superficial and deep layers of the stratum corneum for up to 13 days. Reapplication of the medication is, therefore, not required and compliance problems are avoided.

How should Lamisil Once® be applied?
It should be applied to both feet, even if no signs are visible. One tube is sufficient to treat both feet.

It should be applied with the fingers, first between, then under, then over all toes. It should then be applied to the soles and sides of the feet, as Athlete’s Foot often spreads from between the toes to infect other areas of the foot.

It should be applied once evenly, and not massaged into the skin. The product should then be left to dry to a film for 1-2 minutes, before wearing footwear.

What are the side effects, contraindications, drug interactions of Lamisil Once®?
There are no known hazards (including drug interactions, carcinogenesis, mutagenesis, or impairment of fertility) associated with the topical use of Lamisil Once®.  It is for external use only and should not be brought into contact with the eyes.  It is not recommended for patients under 18 years of age and is not recommended during pregnancy and lactation.

Lamisil Once® can, in rare circumstances, cause allergic reactions after use, such as redness, itching or stinging.  If this should happen, it should be washed off with soap and water.

After applying Lamisil Once®, how long will the skin take to heal?
Lamisil Once® treats the cause of Athlete’s Foot. However, the skin needs time to heal. As with all antifungal treatments, the skin can need up to six weeks to fully heal, due to the normal 10 to 14-day stratum corneum skin turnover cycle.
