The active ingredient of Lamisil^® AT and Lamisil Once^®, terbinafine hydrochloride, inhibits the enzyme squalene epoxidase, which is essential for the formation of ergosterol (a vital component of fungal cell membranes).  It's fungicidal effect is dependant on the accumulation of intracellular squalene in lipid vesicles 9in the fungus cytoplasm. These numerous lipid droplets cause holes to form in the fungal cell membrane - quickly resulting in the death of the fungal cell.

The Lamisil^® over the counter range of antifungal treatments all contain the active ingredient terbinafine which kills the dermatophtyte fungi which cause Athlete’s Foot. Lamisil Once^® is specifically designed to cure the interdigital form of Athlete’s Foot; the other Lamisil^® products will do the same job, but require one daily application for seven days. The other products are also suitable for tinea cruris and tinea corporis.
