myths

Everyone’s heard of Athlete’s Foot and lots of people get it. So why is the condition so little understood? Here are some of the most common misconceptions we’ve come across:

Only sports people get Athlete’s Foot.
No. Anyone can get it. But sports people are among the most at-risk groups because their feet spend so much time in hot, sweaty trainers and boots.

OK, only people who wear trainers all the time get it.
Not true either, although trainers create the perfect conditions for Athlete’s Foot to develop.

Athlete’s Foot only affects the feet.
Although ‘tinea pedis’ is a foot condition, the fungus can develop into other conditions in other parts of your body, like the groin and palms of your hands.

Only unhygienic people get Athlete’s Foot!
While it’s true that people who don’t wash and dry their feet regularly are vulnerable to Athlete’s Foot, it’s also true that people who wash their feet excessively can expose themselves to it. Vigorous scrubbing can damage the skin and let the fungi in.

Ladies don’t get Athlete’s Foot.
Not true! And high heels and tight shoes increase your chances of developing the condition.

Athlete’s Foot is pretty harmless really.
If left untreated, Athlete's Foot can spread, cracking large areas of skin and exposing your feet to other, more serious, infections which could eventually disable you.

I needn’t bother treating the other foot.
Even if you’ve only got the symptoms in one of your feet, it’s highly likely that your other foot is infected too.  If using Lamisil Once®  you should treat both feet.

It’s alright – you can’t catch my Athlete’s Foot.
Athlete’s Foot is highly contagious. If you’ve got it, don’t walk around barefoot or share towels, and start treating it.

I can stop treatment when it stops itching.
If the treatment you’re using specifies a course of treatment (seven days with most Lamisil ® AT products, up to four weeks with ‘fungistatic’ treatments), make sure you complete the full course, otherwise the symptoms may return. Lamisil Once®, however, just requires one application.

The itching and burning goes away when I use regular creams or moisturisers. So why do I need an antifungal treatment?
You’re just alleviating the symptoms – temporarily – rather than treating the infection. For better results, use an antifungal.

Contains terbinafine. Always read the label.
